Constable warns trail riders

As summer approaches, Waikouaiti Police Constable Jon-Paul Tremain is
concerned that more of us will be riding trail bikes.

"With more people using the beach, public reserves and gravel back
roads to ride their trail bikes, I think it is timely to remind
everyone what their responsibilities and rules are," Jon said.

"The Land Transport Act 1998 says a 'road' includes a street, a
motorway, a beach, and a place to which the public have access,
whether as of right or not. Which in broad terms means if a vehicle
can be driven on it, then it could be defined as a road."

Jon explained that all vehicles being driven on a road must have a
current warrant of fitness and be licensed to be on the road, and all
drivers orriders of vehicles on a road must have a current New Zealand
Drivers licence suitable for the vehicle they are in control of.

In addition all driver and vehicle related offences that can be
committed on a road can be dealt with by police and the consequences
vary from the issuing of infringement notices to the impoundment of
vehicles and drivers or riders being put before the Court for
offending such as drink-driving or dangerous driving.

"Local police are going to monitor this issue during the summer
months," John warned. "I would strongly urge those riding their trail
bikes in these places to take care not to annoy or endanger other
members of the public. If children are going to use trail bikes in
these areas I recommend it is only done under strict adult
supervision."

Police will act on any information received regarding rider behaviour
and anyone caught committing offences or causing annoyance in public
places such as sports grounds or Dunedin City Council reserves, may
find themselves receiving trespass or infringement notices.

Jon has a reminder for the festive season. "The end of the year brings
its own pressures and temptations, set realistic goals for Christmas
time and always make suitable arrangements regarding transport if
consuming alcohol."

It's that time of year again and we are pleased to advise that
Warrington Beach will have life guards patrolling each weekend
commencing Sunday 31 October. We have got a busy and exciting time
ahead of us and we look forward to seeing you all on the beach over
the coming weeks.

Open Day - Sunday 31 October from 12 noon

Come along and sign up for this season. Meet up with old friends,
enjoy a BBQ, have fun participating in beach activities and sandcastle
competitions – even take a ride on an IRB (weather dependent of
course!) Tell all your friends - we look forward to seeing you there.
If you miss Open Day come along any Sunday from 11.30am -
alternatively contact Mark Familton on 482-2712 or Dawn Hope on
482-2787.

Following the Open Day, you can watch the annual Firefighters versus
Surf Life Guards sporting match; this year they are playing softball,
starting at 2pm.

Beach Bonfire & BBQ Night – Friday 5 November 7.30pm til late

Come along to our community Beach Bonfire and BBQ fundraiser. You are
welcome to bring your own fireworks and let them off in a controlled
environment (we will have first aid in attendance). There will be a
sausage sizzle, hot drinks and supper items for sale. Everyone is
welcome.

U19 Patrol Teams Competition – Sunday November 7 - 9am at Warrington Beach

Warrington SLSC will be hosting the Patrol Teams competition this
season. Teams of six life guards will pit their skills against other
clubs to compete for a trophy and a chance to travel to compete
against other regions.

Our club rooms are available to hire for functions. Please contact
Hannah Randall on 482-1141 for more details and to check availability.

Congratulations to WSLSC members Immi and Eilis Doyle and Jack Turner
who travelled to Wellington to compete in the 2010 State New Zealand
Pool champs. Immi and partner Carla Laughton (St Clair SLSC) won
gold in the Open Womens Line Throw while sister Eilis won gold in the
Under 13 Mixed 4x50m Obstacle Race. Jack came 3rd in the 200m LC
Freestyle course with obstacles, 4th in the 4x50m relay event and 4th
in the 4x50m obstacle relay event.

Locals call meeting on 'boy racer' problem

Locals are calling a public meeting to discuss community action on the
problem of vandalism to the Warrington Domain lawns. With several
visits to Warrington in June by car enthusiasts known as 'boy racers'
from Dunedin, the Domain has been left in a muddy condition and
residents' sleep has been repeatedly disturbed.

The Warrington Reserve Group has agreed to host the meeting.
Various proposals to deal with the issue will be presented in
five-minute time slots with brief question-and-answer sessions. The
meeting will then be opened for a general discussion. Organisers want
people to contribute creative, practical ideas for a positive
solution.

The Warrington Reserve Group are organising a public meeting
to be held at the Warrington Hall on Thursday 18 February
7.30pm. The meeting is an opportunity to find out more about
the DCC's Draft Coastal Dune Reserves Management Plan. How will it
effect our area? Staff from the DCC will present what is the
purpose of the management plan, how it will be implemented,
and how to make a submission. Please come along and hear
about plans for trees, wildlife, dogs, facilities and
coastal erosion.

Three campervan bullies go to jail, fourth goes home

Three of the 20 or so people who attacked and nearly destroyed the
campervan of an elderly couple visiting Warrington Domain last Autumn
were jailed this week for criminal damage. A fourth received home
detention.

Surf club ladies now in it for life

elected to life membership at the club's AGM last month.

Lyn Hastie and Kaye Burns held senior positions in the club for several years.

Lyn and Kaye were also presented with huge bouquets of flowers.

WARRINGTON SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB

An important task for our Life Guards and Patrol Supports, who are the
only beach safety patrol between St Kilda and Christchurch, is to keep
their swimming performance and fitness up through the winter months.
This is also an important learning time for our Junior members, who we
all hope will become Life Guards in a year or three. Swimming
continues throughout the winter months. There are pool champs coming
up later in the year and we hope to have some young clubbies taking
part.

Otago Surf Life Saving has recently held its break up for the year,
apparently the entertainment was much enjoyed by young and old alike.
A magician provided some wonderful tricks and had many wondering just
how that happened or where it went. The prize giving saw one of our
members receive the top Life Guard of the Year Award. Congratulations
to Pru Casey who has received this award and also brought along a
number of new guards to our club.

Warrington patrollers gained 100% in all three of their patrol
inspections this past season which is a great achievement.

Our next club meeting will be held on Monday July 20 at 7.30pm in the
club rooms. Don't worry if it's a cold night as the room is always
warm with heaters and hot drinks for all.

Our club Annual General Meeting will be held on Friday 14 August at
7pm.There will be food and drink and it will be for all family
members. Please give some thought to what positions you and your
family can take on. There WILL be positions up for grabs. More details
next month.

Although we haven't written a column in a while the Warrington Reserve
Group has been busy over the past months.

We held a workshop at the Warrington Surf Club on 16 November 2008
about the human impact on wildlife and the beach environment. The
workshop was attended by 21 people representing 12 groups and
organisations involved in Beach Care - from Waikouaiti to Taieri
Mouth. The network that developed out of this workshop includes a
further 6 groups so far. We share information and ideas and will
sometimes work collaboratively on shared interests. Along with a
wealth of experience within the network there is a strong focus on
pragmatic solutions to spaces shared by wildlife and humans. Thank you
to Waikouaiti Coast Community Board for supporting this initiative.

In September last year we received an award for participating in the
Keep Dunedin Beautiful clean up week. Then in March this year, Seaweek
had a rubbish collection site at Warrington Beach for the first time.
All rubbish collected was weighed and prizes were won by local people.
The Warrington Reserve Group collected over 60 kg of rubbish and we
won 50 plants from Blueskin Nurseries. Thank you to everyone who
collected rubbish with us for these two events, helping to raise
awareness and clean up our natural environment.

On Anzac Day afternoon we were pleased to participate in an Otago Tree
Society Planting Day. Our two groups will continue to collaborate so
we can support their ongoing planting of the Esplanade embankment.
Thanks to all of you who donated your time and energy to this project.
A special mention to Community Corrections groups for clearing the
site.

Please put 26 July at 10:30 am in your diary or on your fridge for our
upcoming planting days. We need your help for continued success in
recreating a native plant windbreak for the Domain.

We've had a really good success rate with our plants. This is partly
due to careful selection of appropriate hardy plants and to good luck
- we've had more rain than usual. We are grateful to Task Force Green
Groups for watering and to Community Corrections for weeding the site.

Three other sites were chosen by the DCC and planted last winter with
plants left over from planting projects in Dunedin. Two of these sites
are growing well. They are beside the road to the bay where there is a
reasonable amount of soil. The third site on the Domain has been less
successful. However, this was to be expected as the site is sandy and
exposed to drying winds.

DCC Parks Officer, Renee Gordon, is keen to support ongoing planting.
This year she has provided 100 natives to be planted along the edges
of existing vegetation in the wider Domain area. She has ordered
individual plant protectors so we won't have to fence off whole areas
again.

Renee would also like to plant some test sites of pikao (or pingao) at
Warrington. Previous plantings years ago were gobbled by rabbits so
this time it will be fenced. We are looking into possible suitable
sites so if you see a fenced off area in the dunes it may well be a
pikao test site. This is a native sand-binding sedge plant. The marram
grass that holds our dunes together is an introduced plant.

We are always interested in your feedback and questions. Anyone
interested is welcome to join our group. We also have Warrington
Reserve Group Outreach membership for anyone who wishes to receive our
minutes. This enables us to get more detailed feedback from anyone who
doesn't wish to attend meetings.

The season has come to an end but we are still busy with planning,
swimming practice and training for next summer.

It has been a busy few months with competitions, new guards getting
trained, rescue boat workshops and training, meetings, fundraising,
fun and friendships.

Our new club rooms were recently opened and attended by present and
past members, sponsors and three of the very first members of our old
club, dating from its origins at Moana Rua on Middle Beach, South
Dunedin. It was great to welcome back Mrs Pat Ellison, Mr Arnold Jones
and Mr Fred Burton who were the instigators of our very first
Warrington club room, the A-frame. They took two years to build this
in their own time and often using their own money. We have much to be
thankful for and they were acknowledged accordingly. Lyne and Gilbert
Carlyle officially opened the new extension.

Our new club rooms are now available for public use and have already
been used by the Waikouaiti Coast Community Board for a public
meeting. If you wish to use the club rooms for a function,meeting or
whatever phone Hannah Randall to make a booking: 482 1141.

Our Monster Garage Sale raised over $1,700. Thanks to everyone who
contributed goods and the many bargain hunters who supported this
great fundraiser for our Club. Special thanks to Marilyn and Gordon
Weare, Brenda Greene, Lyne Carlyle and Blueskin Nurseries. Raffle
winners were: Hamper,Daisy from Waitati, plants Rowena Park and Rachel
McMillan both of Warrington.

The seasons break-ups have also been held, one for the lifeguards and
the other for all families. The Familton/Forbes Family and Pete
Russell were the recipients of the club's trophies for going the extra
mile in time given is so many ways to the running of the club.
Congratulations and well done to you all.

There are many others to also thank, whose work often goes un-noticed:
Club coaches, meeting attendees, menders, fixers, and a special
thank-you to our treasurer who does a huge job behind the scenes.

Thanks also to our band of Surf Lifeguards and Patrol Supports.
Numbers have grown this year and patrols received 100% in their three
inspections during the season.

We have had great results from Warrington in competitions this season.
Unfortunately there have not been any junior results published in the
ODT, so here are some highlights this season for our juniors:

Elsa who was 2nd overall in the under 8 girls

Ali was 1st and Mira 2nd in the under 10 girls

Scott was 2nd in the under 10 boys

Johnny was 3rd in under 12 boys

Matt 3rd equal in the under 14 boys

Ali was 3rd equal in the Otago Champs.

Ali won the top girl trophy

Scott won the top boy trophy

We thank Laurie Henderson for work on our new kitchen flooring. If you
